- What is Pre-IB?
- Pre-IB is meant to give students the skills they will need to be successful in high school and beyond, whether or not they decide to become IB students.
- In addition to learning the content of their classes, Pre-IB is meant to teach students how to learn. The integration of skills to support learning are an essential part of the programme. The focus is on:
- essay writing and research
- time management and organization
- public speaking
- lab skills
- building confidence
- study strategies
- analysis and critical thinking
- mindfulness
- note-taking and active reading
- Pre-IB is meant for students who love learning --- they don’t have to be the smartest or the students with the top marks, but it is meant for students who want to improve their skills and don’t mind a challenge
- It is meant for students who are planning to go to university
- Pre-IB students take courses that are similar to what a regular grade 10 student would take: English, Math, Science, History with the option to take French if they are planning on taking French as part of the IB programme
- Students also take two or three elective courses. It is recommended that students take a gym credit and a fine arts credit
- The difference between a Pre-IB course and an academic 10 course is not dramatic. There is an emphasis on skill-building and learning how to learn
- In English class, the teacher may do more complex texts than a regular English class. In science, there is more emphasis on labs. Math may move faster as there is an extra unit that Pre-IB Math requires
- No. When surveyed, Pre-IB students said they do an hour’s worth of homework a night, usually some math problems
- Many Pre-IB students are heavily involved in extra-curricular activities and have part-time jobs. We have had nationally ranked athletes complete the program
- Yes. Pre-IB tends to be a community. Students take their courses together so they make friends with each other quickly. Pre-IB students often emphasize how close they become with each other and their teachers when asked about the benefits of the program
